The Matrix was released on Easter weekend in 1999. Eastern is of importance to Christianity due to the fact that it’s the resurrection of Jesus Christ. The Matrix and Christianity shares common similarities due to relevant characters in the bible that from the characters in The Matrix. Though in the following text there will be a few unfamiliar ideas, but its message is to identify how their similarities carry out the message.
Christianity is the belief of God, Jesus Christ and The Holy Spirit. These beliefs originates from the Old Testament and the New Testament. Christian people believe that there is only one God and that God created everything in this earth. In the bible God conveyed his teachings through Jesus Christ, Christ means “the anointed one”. Though Jesus was of flesh and bones God was thought of light or even rationality; and because we were made by God we are taught honor and respect amongst each other. In the New Testament we will be faced with five characters that are of similarity to characters in The Matrix. These characters in the bible played an important role.
The Matrix is a movie based on artificial intelligence and these machines has taken over humanity. In the movie humanity are at war with machines. The characters in the movie which are Neo, Morpheus, Trinity, Cypher, and Agent Smith are faced with having to save humanity, however, Agent Smith who is relevant to Pontius Pilate (Pontius Pilate was the man who was the judge of Jesus Christ in the New Testament) is trying to cause chaos within the system. By conquering his desires, he will want to eventually gain control of the matrix in order to manage human’s “reality”. Neo who is the “anointed one” goes through a self discovery journey that creates conflicts with his title. He cannot come to terms that he is the one who can save humanity. When Neo goes to the Oracle she tells him of the gift he posses yet he still continues to deny it.
The characters in the bible are of similarity to the characters in the movie, but it doesn’t mean that they are exactly the same. Neo and Jesus Christ carry out the same prophesy, in Jesus prophecy He is meant to die and be resurrected. However, unlike Neo Jesus was a sinless man. Though Neo killed people he is looked as a Messiah because of his characteristics. Jesus saved humanity when he was on a cross, he sacrificed his freedom. Like Jesus, Neo also sacrificed his will to survive when he decided to go and save Morpheus. When he came into terms that he was the one, he began to apply this into his mind and became the person to save all that is wrong. Morpheus and John the Baptist are somewhat relevant. They both stand out because of their honorable personality. When Jesus used to give the word of God in the temples of Jerusalem John the Baptist recognized his ability. He declared Jesus as “the lamb of God”. Meanwhile, Morpheus declared Neo as the one once he saw his abilities. After Neo was killed, he resurrected when Trinity kissed him. Jesus resurrected after he died in the cross.
When looking at the movie, Trinity seems to represent Mary Magdalene. Trinity somewhat dedicated her life to Neo. When Neo first entered their inner circle she would take him food to his bed and she would constantly look at him with loving eyes. Meanwhile, we would see the jealousy of Cypher rising. When Jesus was crucified, the bible mentioned Magdalene always being by His side. Magdalene felt as if she owed Jesus her life due to him deriving seven demons from her body. Unlike Trinity, she doesn’t owe Neo anything but the will to love him. The relationship differs from the relationship of Jesus and Magdalene. But, because it differs doesn’t mean that the relevancy isn’t there. Trinity’s kiss to Neo is the symbol of his resurrection. Cypher and Judas Iscariot are very alike. The betrayal of their superiors has led them astray from their loyalty. Jealousy reigns king in their eyes and the need to posses what’s not theirs takes complete control. Judas betrayed Jesus and told the Jewish people where he was, all of this for a little bit of money. Cypher told Agent Smith the plan to take down Morpheus and put him in a trap in order to position him in the matrix, all to gain the love of a woman who didn’t love him. It is known that “Cypher is the shortened version of the name Lucifer”, which Is the devil. Something unholy and sinful. From the beginning one could note that he was not loyal.
The Matrix and the bible are used to conveyed a message. In order to place thought in the mind and make choices. The Matrix allowed humans to think outside the box meanwhile the bible is given as a set of rules for us to follow. Though both differ there are many texts out there that are of comparable ideas; it does not remove the message it is trying to depict. This Science Fiction movie has a lot of religious parts but it doesn’t remove its idea of a machine controlling everything.

This essay was very well written and you really showed your knowledge of both Christianity and the symbols inside the Matrix. Although, my symbolism of the characters were much different than yours, I really understood where you were coming from and that they made sense. Everything is well structured and there is a lot of information feeding off of the thesis. Your essay included a good topic sentence that allow the body paragraphs to flow with information easy. Aside from one or two grammar errors, I found nothing else wrong with the essay.
