Matrix Essay #1

The Matrix was released on Easter weekend in 1999. Eastern is of importance to Christianity due to the fact that it’s the resurrection of Jesus Christ. The Matrix and Christianity shares common similarities due to relevant characters in the bible that from the characters in The Matrix. Though in the following text there will be a few unfamiliar ideas, but its message is to identify how their similarities carry out the message.
Christianity is the belief of God, Jesus Christ and The Holy Spirit. These beliefs originates from the Old Testament and the New Testament. Christian people believe that there is only one God and that God created everything in this earth. In the bible God conveyed his teachings through Jesus Christ, Christ means “the anointed one”. Though Jesus was of flesh and bones God was thought of light or even rationality; and because we were made by God we are taught honor and respect amongst each other. In the New Testament we will be faced with five characters that are of similarity to characters in The Matrix. These characters in the bible played an important role.
The Matrix is a movie based on artificial intelligence and these machines has taken over humanity. In the movie humanity are at war with machines. The characters in the movie which are Neo, Morpheus, Trinity, Cypher, and Agent Smith are faced with having to save humanity, however, Agent Smith who is relevant to Pontius Pilate (Pontius Pilate was the man who was the judge of Jesus Christ in the New Testament) is trying to cause chaos within the system. By conquering his desires, he will want to eventually gain control of the matrix in order to manage human’s “reality”. Neo who is the “anointed one” goes through a self discovery journey that creates conflicts with his title. He cannot come to terms that he is the one who can save humanity. When Neo goes to the Oracle she tells him of the gift he posses yet he still continues to deny it.
The characters in the bible are of similarity to the characters in the movie, but it doesn’t mean that they are exactly the same. Neo and Jesus Christ carry out the same prophesy, in Jesus prophecy He is meant to die and be resurrected. However, unlike Neo Jesus was a sinless man. Though Neo killed people he is looked as a Messiah because of his characteristics. Jesus saved humanity when he was on a cross, he sacrificed his freedom. Like Jesus, Neo also sacrificed his will to survive when he decided to go and save Morpheus. When he came into terms that he was the one, he began to apply this into his mind and became the person to save all that is wrong. Morpheus and John the Baptist are somewhat relevant. They both stand out because of their honorable personality. When Jesus used to give the word of God in the temples of Jerusalem John the Baptist recognized his ability. He declared Jesus as “the lamb of God”. Meanwhile, Morpheus declared Neo as the one once he saw his abilities. After Neo was killed, he resurrected when Trinity kissed him. Jesus resurrected after he died in the cross.
When looking at the movie, Trinity seems to represent Mary Magdalene. Trinity somewhat dedicated her life to Neo. When Neo first entered their inner circle she would take him food to his bed and she would constantly look at him with loving eyes. Meanwhile, we would see the jealousy of Cypher rising. When Jesus was crucified, the bible mentioned Magdalene always being by His side. Magdalene felt as if she owed Jesus her life due to him deriving seven demons from her body. Unlike Trinity, she doesn’t owe Neo anything but the will to love him. The relationship differs from the relationship of Jesus and Magdalene. But, because it differs doesn’t mean that the relevancy isn’t there. Trinity’s kiss to Neo is the symbol of his resurrection. Cypher and Judas Iscariot are very alike. The betrayal of their superiors has led them astray from their loyalty. Jealousy reigns king in their eyes and the need to posses what’s not theirs takes complete control. Judas betrayed Jesus and told the Jewish people where he was, all of this for a little bit of money. Cypher told Agent Smith the plan to take down Morpheus and put him in a trap in order to position him in the matrix, all to gain the love of a woman who didn’t love him. It is known that “Cypher is the shortened version of the name Lucifer”, which Is the devil. Something unholy and sinful. From the beginning one could note that he was not loyal.
The Matrix and the bible are used to conveyed a message. In order to place thought in the mind and make choices. The Matrix allowed humans to think outside the box meanwhile the bible is given as a set of rules for us to follow. Though both differ there are many texts out there that are of comparable ideas; it does not remove the message it is trying to depict. This Science Fiction movie has a lot of religious parts but it doesn’t remove its idea of a machine controlling everything.

The Allegory Cave tells us about two men named Socrates and Glaucon. Socrates found prisoners in a den. Socrates begins to explain to Glaucon the strange image; he mentions how the fire that’s in the cave reflects the shadows of what these prisoners are doing. Socrates explains how these prisoners were never allowed to see anything but the shadows and he wonders whether these prisoners were curious about their shadows speaking. Furthermore Socrates explains how and when these prisoners come out the negative or positive effect they would take. Questioning their reality, Socrates wonders if they would be brave enough to face the day or to run away from all they lived in. He conjures up many ideas on how these prisoners would react to being emancipated meanwhile Glaucon reassures him of his ideas. In the end Socrates explain to all he has been saying were his beliefs, being afraid that if he told this allegory to anyone else that they would be frightened.

Blog 4: The Allegory of the Cave through History

Many people believe that reincarnation is real. Not only is it in history but also in the present. When you have done good in your past life or you have done bad you will be reincarnated in a another living form. Per say, if I were filled with sin I’d be something of a lower form such as a cat or maybe another insignificant creature. If I were a good person I’d be reincarnated into something like another good human.
At times many people fall into this illusion because to know that you will continue to live or have lived before lures in a person and makes them feel more at comfort. Many people cling into this illusion due to lack of faith in a “personal God”. If you are familiar with Christianity there's a final judgment day many people are aware of. They tend to fear this due to their devious act. In order to fall from this thought they believe that reincarnation will place them in a fruitful or fruitless path. So they live out their lives depending on how they want to live later on.
Reincarnation is a way to justify a human’s behavior. There is something dreadful about following rules of a “God” or even the thought of believing that nothing is real such as Atheism. The fear of death and even the fear of your loved one being dead is a striking feeling. And can alter your way of being but if you believe that reincarnation will defeat death and will place your loved ones where they deserve to be, that will be a much rather comforting though than thinking he or she went to hell or that nothing happens after death. Ingrid Van Mater mentioned how “reincarnation implies that there is an immortal part of us that survives death. “ There is a lot of truth to this quote, because in the end humans look for comfort in the darkest hole just to make tragedies better.
Even though we all look for reassurance or soothing we can all rely in these illusions as a coping system. Believing in God is no less than believing that we will be reincarnated. Its all a way to see light. We are filled with life, a life everyone wants to immortality live.

In this excerpt i feel like the most important key is the word shadow. Indeed this quote is of importance but to seek further meaning of the word shadow can help come into depth of this entire excerpt. This quote depicts the lives of these prisoners. They remain ignorant to the "absolute" things in life, it's their truth. The actual trees and even the looks of outsiders are nothing but reflecting shadows to cover up the legitimate existent. The necessity of this quote summarizes what enlightenment and unenlightened can affect since childhood years. In comparison to a film named Dogtooth, it shows how three adults were incarcerated in their own homes by their parents. They were constantly lied to. The young girl thought that zombies were yellow wild flowers and that cats were evil creatures out to get the family.

When people are faced in many situations in life we all tend to have different views or ways of behaving.  That’s what makes us unique. My behavior is very different from many people’s behavior when it comes to public self and private self. There are times in which the way I behave in public interferes with the way I behave on my own. Either way it helps me cope with many things. Due to fear of judgment it always had a strong impact and controlled how I am in public and self.
When in private I feel much more at comfort with my self. I know no one is looking to judge or looking to speak what flaw I put out in display. I grew up very self-conscious so it makes it harder for me to adjust to anything but my private self. When alone I feel like I don’t have to please anyone. I have the liberty and right to let my mind wander freely without any distractions from the outside world. At times I feel like being in my private zone harms me much more than being out in public. I have no limitations to what I do or what I say so that could lead me to trouble. When having bad thoughts I can help myself by having the privilege to watching anything that’ll entertain me and keep my mind off of things that’ll scare me. Since I am pleased by boundless choices it is obvious I fancy being in my private self than my public self.
When I am in the train or I’m walking in the streets I tend to have a lot of anxiety. My mind suddenly knows that I am on constant alert for public criticism. I grapple into the eyes of other people just to notice if I’m being looked at. If you distinguish the time I am alone to when I’m in public you can tell there is a difference in my posture and how I portray myself. Sometimes its unintentional and other times I am aware and in control of how I behave myself. I seem uncomfortable and always-in haste pace even when I’m not going anywhere important. When I am in the train I avoid eye contact by reading a book or pretending I am slightly sleeping. I dislike listening to conversations because I feel like I am intruding so I put my iPod on full volume. I am mindful that I will be noticed so by doing these things such as reading or listening to music; it makes me feel comfortable. Even if I know someone is looking at me, I have these things to rely on to not make me so nervous and visible.
As I got older I began to notice my mom’s constant complaint about me being too serious when she was presenting me to her friends. It would always bother me when she wanted me to be friendly, meanwhile I was worrying about how her friends will look at me. As I previously mentioned about being boundless to choices, I tend to forget how to keep that away from my public self. I dislike restriction so this way it creates a clash between my private self and public. I feel like I have to restrict my self from so many things, it makes me uncomfortable and here is when the confusion of these two life styles collide. Its not that problematic but it can confuse me and get me into trouble. To be specific I like to express my opinions but at times I tend to forget that people may be as self-conscious as me. If you look at me when I’m alone and look at me when I’m in public you can tell that fear of judgment does mold how I behave.
